“When I close my eyes at night
In the darkness I see light
Blue clouds in a big white sky.”
Margaret Wise Brown
In this specially created performance for Mountains to Sea, we celebrate our first brush with language when as babies, lullabies are, for all of us, a special type of speech. In Suantraí , hear some of our best–loved lullabies as well as some from other traditions as we join Eithne Ní Catháin (Inni K) singing some of her favourites for a gathering of babies and parents. Neuroscientists believe that lullabies, songs and rhymes of every culture carry the “signature” melodies and inflections of our mother tongue, preparing our ears for voice and our brains for language.
“Nuair a dhruidim mo shúile ist'oíche
Feicim solas sa dorchadas
Néalta gorma i spéir mhór bhán”
Margaret Wise Brown
Sa léiriú seo, cruthaithe go speisialta don fhéile ‘Ó Mhullach Go Muir’, déanaimid céiliúradh ar ár gcéad teangmháil le teanga mar, nuair is naíonáin muid, is cineál canúint faoi leith iad na suantraí.
I ‘Suantraí’ cloisfear cuid d’ár suantraíis mó le rá agus cinn ó thraidisiúin eile agus muid tagtha le chéile le Eithne Ní Chatháin agus í ag ceol na cinn b’ansa lei i dtionól do linbh agus a dtuistí. Creideann néaraeolaithe go niompraíonn suantraí, amhráin agus rannóga ‘chuile cultúr bun-fhoinn agus casadh glóir an teånga dúchais agus iad ag ullmhú ár gcluasa don ghuth agus ár n-intinní don tanga.
